Survey Guidelines and Recommendations

Guidelines and Tips
Select the tab of interest below but we encourage you to read all Sections to ensure you post good quality surveys that provide the community with rich and valuable content. The Topics tab is especially recommended as it offers good examples of question types for each one.

  • Surveys - Once you have created and posted your new survey, you will not be able to edit the question or the answer options. This would make reporting and statistics invalid and potentially some responses obsolete. It is strongly advised to save your survey as a Draft and return to it later for a second proof reading before publishing it.

  • Subjects - Each question is assigned a Category, Topic, and a Subject. Categories and Topics are system-defined classifications and explained later. The Subject is written by the creator. Subjects are limited to 50 characters because they need to be concise and meaningful in order to be easily indexed and searched. It would be best to write a Subject with a few keywords rather than a sentence. For example,  "The Best 80s Comedy TV Shows" would be too wordy, instead use "80s Comedy Shows".

  • Questions - Your questions need to be as specific as possible to convey meaning acurately and avoid confusion. Be specific when asking about something by adding details such as location, context, timeframe, people, events, brands, and so on. For example, if you are assessing buying a used Ford Mustang, asking "Are Ford Mustangs reliable?" would be too general a question. Instead, "How often do Ford Mustangs, pre-2020, require repairs besides regular maintenance?", would more useful and easier to answer.

  • Answers - Sometimes, thinking of what answers you seek, can help define the question more acurately. Refrain from including possible answers in the question as it forces the answers to be more Yes/No type questions. For instance, "Do you feed your cats dry food or wet food?" is a very simple question with few possible answers. It might be better to ask something like, "What type of food do you serve your cats most often?". A possible asnwer scale for this would be: a) Dry Kibble  b) Wet Poultry c) Wet Fish d) Wet Beef e) A mix of Wet options f) Fresh Meat g) A Mix of Wet and Dry  h) Other. These answers would provide you with a rich set of knowledge about cat feeding habits.

  • Multiple Choice - By design, all questions are multiple choice and by default, respondents can choose only one answer. Accordingly, phrase questions to avoid the possibility that people have to provide an incomplete answer. For example, "How did you feel about the movie 'Scream VI'?" No matter what choices you include as possible answers, many people would likely want to select more than one answer. Rephrase the question to get to the information you really need such as "How much scarier was Scream VI compared to Scream V"? or "On a scale of 1-10, how much did you enjoy Scream VI?".

As mentioned above, by default, respondents can choose one answer per question. However, when creating your survey, you can opt to allow up to 5 possible answers per user. This is useful when asking respondents to select "all that apply" or the top choices. For example, you can ask "In 2024, who are the top 3 quarterbacks in the NFL?" and provide a list of the 10 popular quarterbacks to choose from.

  • Answer Scale- By design, you are limited to assigning 2-10 possible answers per survey. It is more intuitive and easier to answer surveys when answers are ordered sequentially, from less to more. e.g. An answer scale of "a) Fabulous b) Horrible c) Not so bad d) Pretty Good e) Neutral", would confuse responders and result in hard to read reports and charts.Order the answers logically as in "a) Horrible b) Not so bad c) Neutral d) Pretty Good e) Fabulous".

When you create a new survey, you will have the opportunity to select a system-defined answer scale among several choices. These scales offer commonly used answer lists such as Importance, Quality, Quantity, Size, Frequency, and so on. Please review them carefully before creating your own custom scale because these predefined lists are easy to use and provide consistency for respondents.

You can also create your own custom answers but keep in mind these tips:

  • By design, you are limited to a  minimum of two (2) and maximum of ten (10) possible choices

  • Each answer is limited to 50 characters for easier viewing and generally a few keywords are always better

  • Preferably, order your answers from less to more

  • Choose "Edit Scale Options ..." to start a brand new blank scale of your design

  • When creating your own custom scale, review it carefully and make sure all possible answers have been reflected by your choices

  • In a custom scale, it is usually recommended to list "Other" as a final choice to capture possible answers you may not have thought of

  • Remember, once you posted a question, it cannot be changed. If you forgot to include a choice, it will be too late!

The way you phrase your question is important to avoid confusion and mistakes. Before posting, we recommend these practices to improve clarity of your surveys:

  • Re-read your question several times. If possible, ask another person to review your question to ensure it reflects your inquiry accurately

  • Review your question for grammar and spelling mistakes

  • Since SOS is an application with global reach and does not support localization at the moment, it is advised to write your questions using english only. This will ensure maximum exposure and participation

  • Include proper context in your question by specifying details like people, location, timeframe, products, etc. This provides clarity and focus to the audience and avoid possible confusion and misleading answers

  • However, try to be concise, longer questions may tend to be less clear and increase the chance readers will misinterpret the survey. Similarly, avoid run-on sentences, break up any statements in logical parts.

  • In the same vein as above, avoid extra details that are not necessary and could pose a dangerous bias in answering. For instance, asking "Beer and pizza famously goes together for many people, what drink do you prefer to have with your pizza? " This question plants an answer in the mind of respondents and could skew results. Avoid providing leading questions.

All parts of your surveys (Subjects, Questions, and Answers) must comply with our and Terms of Service agreement. We reserve the right to remove surveys that violate these agreements, especially if they contain:

  • Foul Language

  • Hate speech

  • Aggressive speech

  • Intolerance and racism

  • Content designed to troll, mock, or marginalize people or situations

Your privacy is guaranteed in several ways on the site:

  • When creating a new account, we do not ask for your fullname, birhdate (only birth year), address, phone or any other personal identification detail. Even in the event of a system breach, personally identifying data would never be exposed.

  • We recommend you select a Username that is unique but does not reflect your real name. This is not a social media site that relies on certifiable personal identity.

  • The system gathers some biographical and demographical information when you register an account but this information is never distributed to 3rd parties or even exposed as SOS does not use cookies

  • No payment information is stored on our site

  • Your answers to surveys are always Anonymous

Still need help? Did you hover over all the Topics to see lists of examples of subjects for each one? A quick Google Search can help you find good articles on writing good survey questions too.

Please note that SOS reserves the right to remove any survey that violates our policies or does not follow these guidelines.
